As a member of the medieval Hanseatic League, Hamburg is considered the most important city in northern Germany. With its almost 2 million inhabitants, it is the second largest city in Germany and the hub of a diverse metropolitan region that is home to more than 5 million people. As the third largest seaport in Europe, Hamburg impressively combines Hanseatic tradition with modernity. This is particularly evident in the newly built HafenCity, home to the iconic Elbphilharmonie, which borders directly on the UNESCO world heritage Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus districts. The liveable city is also characterised by a broad range of cultural, sports and leisure activities in the many green areas, different districts as well as on and around the rivers Alster and Elbe.
